Sherry Brewer MD ABoIM IFMCP is a primary care internist with additional board certifications in Integrative and Functional medicine. Prior to her career in medicine, she received extensive training in quality improvement as a chemical engineer at Procter and Gamble. She’s worked in primary care at the VA for 22 years and currently practices at the Bettendorf CBOC affiliated with the Iowa City VA. She’s a graduate of the first cohort of the RSF program (2020) and will serve as the Interim Associate Program Director for the RSF. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential fellows, curriculum development and fellow mentorship. During her fellowship time she worked on projects to improve rural veteran access to care by shifting acute non-emergent ED visits to primary care and by increasing the use of video visits by primary care practitioners. She also worked on a VISN project to standardize community skilled and non-skilled consults. Her current projects aim to study practitioner well-being during the COVID pandemic and to improve lung cancer screening amongst rural veterans. Additional interests include using Functional Medicine principles to address the root cause of disease and to help navigate veterans through the Whole Health model to reverse chronic illnesses such as diabetes and autoimmune disorders. Additionally, she educates PA students from the University of Iowa during their outpatient primary care rotations and she teaches a module on Integrative pain therapies to University of Iowa medical students.
