Dr. Patricia A. Patrician was the inaugural VAQS Senior Nurse Scholar at the Birmingham site from 2009 – 2024. She joined the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing (SON) in 2008, following a 26-year career in the US Army Nurse Corps, retiring as a Colonel. At the UAB SON, Dr. Patrician was the first holder of the Donna Brown Banton Endowed Professorship, from 2008-2017. In 2017, she became the second faculty member to hold the Rachel Z. Booth Endowed Chair in Nursing. During her tenure at the UAB SON, Dr. Patrician taught in the MSN, DNP, PhD, and Executive DNP programs. She continues to mentor pre- and post-doctoral students and fellows and conduct research on nurse well-being, burnout, staffing and work environments that lead to positive patient, nurse, and organizational outcomes. Dr. Patrician will retire in January 2025, with plans to continue several research projects and current mentorships in an adjunct professor role.
